Overview
Dardan was a member of the Zhangjia clan of the Bordered White Banner. Volume 40 of the official Qing dynasty genealogy, *The Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, records him as the grandson of Elene Guala, the younger brother of Turkun Huangzhan. He served as a military officer in the Hunan campaign, fighting against Sun Kewang's troops at Chalukou. Later, he went to Maolushan in Huguang to participate in the battle against Li Laiheng's troops, and was awarded the title of Yunqiwei for his merits. His son, Zhao Sihai, inherited this title. the original printed source on the names of his ancestors still need to be verified.
Military officer was a substantive position within the military establishment, responsible for personnel and military affairs; Yunqiwei was a hereditary military title that could be inherited according to the system. Zhao Sihai inherited a hereditary title, but this does not automatically mean he also automatically became a military officer. Hunan and Maolushan were where Dardan fought, and cannot be directly changed to his ancestral home.
The original genealogy also records his younger brother, Mashitai, as a Xiaoqixiao (a type of cavalry officer), and Mashitai's son, Marchan, as a military officer; among the descendants of Bozhi are military officers, third-class guards, and students of the Imperial Academy. The descendants of the younger and older brothers cannot all be listed as direct descendants of Dardan, and the students of the Imperial Academy were not already officials. The dates of the two wars, the procedures for granting titles, the characters of the relatives of the previous generation, and the complete lineage of each branch need to be verified against the original engravings and archives, and the original records are preserved.
