Overview
Maning was a member of the Wuzhaku clan of the Bordered Red Banner during the early Qing Dynasty. The official Qing Dynasty genealogy, *The Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, Volume 34, records that he was from the Gahari region and served as a military officer. His son, Mala, served as a defense officer, Lata as an infantry officer, and Mahu as a cavalry officer; his grandson, Ma'ersu, served as a defense officer, and Nasang'a as a military officer. The concluding remarks state that he submitted to the Qing Dynasty at the beginning of its rule. The character "Ning" appears in variant characters in the original printed source, while the original name "Ku" is retained.
The military officer led his assigned guards and performed military duties such as guard duty. Defense was a banner-level military position. The infantry officer served within the infantry system, and the cavalry officer was responsible for his assigned cavalry. The presence of military officers in his father's, son's, and grandson's generations does not imply interchangeability of titles, nor does it automatically create a continuous hereditary system for any particular position.
The Bordered Red Banner was one of the Eight Banners, and the ancestral home of the individual in Gahari differs from their actual military post. Maning himself is a banner cavalry officer (xiaoqixiao), with direct original textual evidence; his descendants' appointments are based on their own accounts. "Former appointments" indicate past service according to the compilation date, without supplementing the start and end years. The location, original name, and residence of Gahari, Mara, and their relatives are pending verification.
