Menek

Overview

Moneke appears in the appendix to the Irgen Gioro clan in Volume 15 of the *General Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*. Listed under the Bordered Yellow Banner, his ancestral home is recorded as "Hurha," and his year of arrival is listed as "unknown." His biography states: he was originally a Defense Commander; his grandsons, Furna and Yatu, were originally Cavalry Commanders; and his great-grandson, Fuqing, was originally a Cavalry Commander. The original entry explicitly lists this title under his name. The kinship hierarchy and statuses such as "former" and "current" are retained as in the original entry. Currently, Moneke's official rank, grade, or birth and death are not inferred from the official positions of his descendants. Relevant institutional terms should be understood within the Qing Dynasty context: a Cavalry Commander was a low-level military officer under the Eight Banners' Zuo Ling system, assisting in the management, training, and dispatch of banner soldiers; it was not a modern school title. Defense Commander was one of the low-level military officers of the Eight Banners; his rank and specific assignments should be determined by considering his battalion, the period, and archival records. "Huerha" retains the historical place name spelling in genealogy books; there may be different places with the same name, different spellings, and changes in jurisdiction, so it cannot be directly matched with a certain administrative region today.
