Clan and Banner Background
The Eji clan, written with an older Chinese-character form in the original genealogy, appears in volume 46 of the Qianlong Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners. Families came from Yehe, the Songhua River and other places. Tongatu and his elder brother Daiyinguli, both of the Plain Red Banner, submitted early. They participated in campaigns associated with Khorchin and Ming frontier fortifications. A distinction earned in the attack on Desheng Fort included the honorific baturu, denoting bravery, and the hereditary rank qidu wei. Later imperial favors increased the hereditary award to second-class qingche duwei; succession involved relatives including Heise, Dase, Bage and Changge.
Family Service and Distinctions
Daiyinguli's descendants included Bayankala, who became superintendent of the Imperial Household Department, and Niyahan, a sixth-rank ceremonial official. Another Plain Red Banner branch descended from Zhu'erku of the Songhua River, whose descendants served as company commanders, infantry officers, guards and storehouse officers. Zhu'erku's grandson Mengkui transferred to the Bordered Red Banner and later held the office of deputy banner commander. The genealogy expressly records both this descent and transfer.
Kinship, Succession, and Evidence
The baturu title, inherited military awards and appointments in imperial household administration were separate categories. The records do not justify merging all Eji branches into one recent family line. Source: Eight Banners Manchu Clan Genealogy, vol. 46.
